"Embarrassed": Andy Murray's hilarious daughter revelation

It seems that while the world showers him with praise at Wimbledon, UK tennis great Andy Murray's own flesh and blood knows just how to bring him back down to earth.

In a pre-Wimbledon press conference, the former champ shared a delightful tale about his seven-year-old daughter, Sophia. Brace yourself for cuteness overload.

“My eldest daughter is aware, now, of what I do, but I don’t think she really sees it as a good thing,” he said, according to talkSPORT.

“I think she gets more embarrassed by it, to be honest. We went to pick her up from school on Friday, and she will never properly acknowledge me at the school gates or around the other kids at school."

Naturally, Andy was baffled by little Sophia's reaction and demanded an explanation later that evening.

“I asked her that night, ‘Why wouldn't you give me a hug at school today?’ She said, ‘Because people know you. You’re number 39 in tennis or something!’

“She doesn’t see it as a cool thing. It is more embarrassing.”

It seems little Sophia doesn't see her dad's tennis prowess as cool or impressive. Quite the opposite. She finds it utterly cringeworthy.

To add to the hilarity, Sophia has adopted a rather unconventional approach when referring to her dad in front of her friends. Instead of a simple "dad," she nonchalantly drops the name "Andy Murray" like it's the punchline of a joke.

Moving on to more serious matters, Murray faced a monumental challenge in his second-round match against Greek sensation Stefanos Tsitsipas (at least, at the time of writing, it was still going, with the match suspended due to curfew).

But let's not forget Murray's triumphant first-round victory over fellow Brit Ryan Peniston. In a display of dominance, he dispatched his compatriot in straight sets, all while being observed by the illustrious Princess of Wales and the legendary Roger Federer from the Royal Box.

With his daughter keeping him grounded and his tennis skills on display, Murray is surely experiencing quite the rollercoaster at Wimbledon. Who knows what other humorous anecdotes will come to light during his epic journey? One thing's for certain: Sophia won't let him forget how "embarrassing" he can be, even as a global tennis star.

Images: Instagram / Resurfacing

“Where’s Andy Murray?” Famous family fires up over Wimbledon faux pas

The family of Andy Murray are up in arms after the tennis champion was left out of a promotional artwork ahead of the annual Wimbledon competition.

On Tuesday, the All England Club unveiled the promotional image to their social media accounts, which shows 15 past tennis champions, past and present, walking down the stairs of the main building at Wimbledon.

At the forefront of the image are members of the “next generation of headline acts” Spaniard world No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz and Italian Jannik Sinner, surrounded by sporting legends such as Roger Federer, Rafa Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Martina Navratilova, Chris Evert, John McEnroe, Bjorn Borg, Boris Becker, Stefan Edberg and the Williams sisters Serena and Venus.

Despite the image being filled with famous tennis faces, there is no image of Andy Murray, a two-time Wimbledon champion, whose famous victory in July 2013 ended 77 years of waiting for a homegrown British male singles winner.

Andy's family and fans reacted with outrage that Murray, who was officially knighted in May 2019, was left out of the composition.

Murray’s uncle Niall Erskine tweeted, “Appalling at every level, all about the men in the forefront and your own British history-maker nowhere to be seen. You should be ashamed of yourselves.”

Elder brother Jamie – who has won two Wimbledon mixed doubles titles – asked, “Where’s Andy Murray?”

LA-based freelance illustrator Grant Gruenhaupt responded to the criticism by saying, “Worry not Jamie, there are more paintings on the way.”

He added, “Back with Wimbledon on another fun series celebrating historic moments and players!"

“This one featuring the greatest rivalries of the past and present as they make the historic walk through the clubhouse and onto Centre Court."

“A lot of nuance in this one. Definitely one of the more challenging scenes I’ve had to tackle.”

Image credits: All England Club / Getty Images

Benedict Cumberbatch fearing for his life after terrifying home invasion

Benedict Cumberbatch and his family have reportedly been left fearing for their lives as a knife-wielding man broke into the star’s North London home and threatened him.

The Daily Mail reported that 35-year-old Jack Bissell, who previously worked as a chef at the Beaumont Hotel in Mayfair, kicked his way through the front gate of the Marvel star’s multimillion-dollar property, allegedly shouting, “I know you’ve moved here. I hope it burns down.”

Cumberbatch, 46, his wife, Sophia Hunter, 45, and their three children were reportedly in the home at the time of the break-in and could hear the intruder screaming outside, according to Page Six.

Bissell also allegedly took one of the family’s plants and threw it at the garden wall, and ripped the intercom off the building after spitting on it.

The intruder reportedly fled the scene before police arrived but, authorities were able to track him down due to DNA evidence he left on the intercom.

Bissell was reportedly arrested, fined and slapped with a three-year restraining order from the Cumberbatch family.

A source told the outlet, “Naturally all of the family were absolutely terrified and thought this guy was going to get in and hurt them.

“Luckily it never went that far. Benedict and Sophie have had many sleepless nights since, worrying that they may be targeted again,” the insider said.

“The fact that it was a targeted intrusion makes it a lot more scary.”

During the trial, prosecutors said Bissell allegedly told a nearby shopkeeper that he had planned to break into the actor’s home and burn it down.

Bissell pleaded guilty and was sentenced on May 10. However, details surrounding the date of the incident have not been disclosed.

According to the Daily Mail, facts of the case could not be reported until they “successfully challenged blanket reporting restrictions this week”.

No clear connection between Bissell and Cumberbatch has been established.

“How is that normal?”: Andy Murray speaks out on Texas school shooting

Two-time Wimbledon champion Andy Murray has said he “can’t understand” how nothing has changed in the US following the mass shooting in Uvalde, Texas, with one survivor’s account being similar to his own experience 26 years ago.

The shooting, which saw an 18-year-old gunman storm an elementary school and kill 19 children and two teachers, came just 10 days after 10 people died in a shooting in Buffalo, New York and has reignited the national debate over US gun control.

The British tennis star, who survived the 1996 Dunblane massacre in Scotland, said the recent shooting made him “angry”.

“It’s incredibly upsetting and it makes you angry. I think there’s been over 200 mass shootings in America this year and nothing changes. I can’t understand that,” Murray, per the ABC.

Andy Murray, who grew up in the Scottish town of Dunblane, was at school when a gunman entered and killed 17 people in 1996. Andy Murray finds stolen wedding ring after issuing plea on social media

Tennis legend Andy Murray took to Instagram on Thursday to issue an unusual plea: help finding his missing wedding ring. According to the video, Murray had left his tennis shoes outside to air them out, and naturally, his wedding ring was tied to his shoes as he can’t wear it when he’s playing.

“Last night after dinner here in Indian Wells, I got back in the car to go back to the hotel and the car didn’t smell great,” he said. “I’d left my tennis shoes in there. It’s been like 38-39 degrees so the shoes are damp, sweaty and smelly.

“I decided when I got back to the hotel that the shoes needed some air, I needed to dry them out a little bit. I have no balcony in my room and didn’t want to leave them in my room because it would stink the room out. “So I thought I’m going to leave the shoes underneath the car to get some air to them and dry them out overnight.”

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Andy Murray (@andymurray)

Unfortunately, when he got back to the car, the shoes were gone. “I had to go to a local pro shop to buy different shoes to what I normally wear — different brand and everything — which isn’t the end of the world but obviously not ideal.”

It wasn’t until later, when his physio pointed out his wedding ring was missing, that Murray realised something far more valuable had been lost. “Needless to say I’m in the bad books at home so I want to try and find it,” he said. “If anyone can share this or may have any clue where it may be, it would be very helpful so I can try get it back.”

Fortunately, the saga has a happy ending. Murray posted an update on Thursday afternoon, letting his followers know that the shoes and the ring had been found. He thanked his fans for sharing the story, and explained that after making a few calls and chatting to hotel security, the incredibly smelly shoes and the ring were both returned to him.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Andy Murray (@andymurray)

“They still absolutely stink, but the shoes are back, the wedding ring is back, and I’m back in the good books. Murray and wife Kim Sears share the two daughters as well as son Teddy, who was born last year.

In an Instagram exchange with Novak Djokovic on Friday, Murray said he was grateful for being able to spend quality time with his family during the self-isolation.

“It’s been nice,” Murray said.

“I saw my kids going out cycling on their own for the first time, swimming on their own for the first time.

“You’re so used to the travelling and the structure that the Tour brings. You get injured, or what’s happening now, and you’re home all the time with your family. It’s a big change.

“But the positives certainly outweigh the negatives. I realise, once tennis is done for me, I’ll be just fine. I was always worried about what that might look like, being in just one place all the time. I’ve enjoyed it. It was good.”

Andy Murray opens up about UK mass shooting

Tennis legend Andy Murray has opened up about his traumatic past in a new Amazon documentary called Andy Murray: Resurfacing.

The film documents his long journey back from injury, but also touches on a certain incident in his childhood that has impacted his life.

Murray revealed in the documentary that he knew the man who shot 16 children and their teacher dead at his primary school in 1996.

The 32-year-old said that the shooting had been “difficult” for him and that tennis was a way he could “escape”.

Excited and proud to announce that for last two years I've been filming my (long) journey back from injury. Andy Murray: Resurfacing hits @primevideouk on Friday the 29th of November and I look forward to hearing what you all think about the film.

😄🎾🎥@primevideosport pic.twitter.com/IJe8QZ9YAy
— Andy Murray (@andy_murray) 7 November 2019

Murray was a student at Dunblane Primary School in Scotland when gunman Thomas Hamilton stormed into the gym, carrying four handguns and 743 rounds of ammunition.

Hamilton opened fire and teacher Gwen Mayor and 15 of her kindergarten students were killed instantly. Another child passed away later in hospital.

Another 15 were wounded in the massacre, which took just five minutes, before Hamilton turned the gun on himself.

Hamilton had been an assistant Boy Scouts leader but asked to leave due to complaints about his behaviour towards some of the boys. He then organised several boys’ clubs, which Murray attended as a child.

“You asked me a while ago why tennis was important to me. Obviously, I had the thing that happened at Dunblane when I was around nine,” Murray says in the documentary.

“I am sure for all the kids there it would be difficult for different reasons. The fact we knew the guy, we went to his kids club, he had been in our car, we had driven and dropped him off at train stations and things,” he said.

“My feeling towards tennis is that it’s an escape for me in some ways. Because all of these things are stuff that I have bottled up,” he revealed.

The conversation was much too painful for Murray to have in person, as he left his thoughts in a voicemail for director Olivia Cappuccini instead of a face-to-face interview.

Murray is hoping to make a full comeback at the Australian Open next year after undergoing hip resurfacing surgery in January.

The injury had threatened to end his career, and Murray was planning to retire after Wimbledon.

He told reporters before the release of the documentary that he was working on building up his fitness and hoped soon to be able to endure five-set matches.

“I know I’ll be able to compete in major tournaments without having to worry about it,” he said, according to news.com.au

“I’ve played three-set matches and some long ones recently, but the best of five is an extra hour, hour-and-a-half on top of that so I’ll find out in Australia.”

It's a boy! Andy Murray celebrates as he becomes a dad for the third time

Sir Andy Murray is sure to be celebrating after the birth of his third child, and first son, with his wife, Kim Sears.

Baby no. 3 was welcomed to the world last week and according to relatives, the two-time Wimbledon champ got to meet their new addition on Monday evening.

While the name has not been made public to the world, it is understood the baby boy was born at a hospital in London, near the family home.

The couple, both 32, already have two girls, Sophia, three and Edie, two.

Murray’s grandfather Roy Erskine, 88, said the former World no. 1 has already shown off his newborn son with his relatives.

He also told The Sun his wife Shirley, 84, travelled to her grandson to meet the newest Murray.

“It’s a wee boy. He was born during the week, I don’t know what his name is yet.

“My wife is away down, she went down this morning,” said Erskine.

When asked if Sophia and Edie were excited about the arrival of their baby brother, Erskin said: “Absolutely. I’ve seen photographs on my wife’s phone.

“They’re both doing fine. I’m just glad that it’s all over.”

The arrival of their son comes almost 10 months after Murray had hip surgery.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Andy Murray (@andymurray) on Jan 29, 2019 at 12:18am PST

He recently joked about needing to get back on the road because the size of his family was getting “out of control”.

“I’ll definitely be taking some time off as we’ll be pretty busy with three children under the age of four,” he said.

“I’ll try to be around as much as possible in the next year, but I know my tennis career won’t go on forever, so there will need to be a balance between me maximising the next few years and spending quality time with my family.

“I’m lucky in that I can train close to home, so that lets me do things like the school run whenever I can.”

Kim sparked pregnancy rumours in July when it was believed she was wearing a maternity top to watch her hubby play at Wimbledon.

The couple tied the knot in his hometown in April 2015.

Are these the top 5 TV families of all time?

Are these the top 5 TV families of all time? Whether dysfunctional or picture-perfect, fictional families have taught us that anything is possible with the support of a loving family. What is your favourite TV family of all time?

Whether dysfunctional or picture-perfect, fictional families have taught us that anything is possible with the support of a loving family. What is your favourite TV family of all time?

Join our countdown of the top 5 TV families!

1. The Bundys (Married With Children)

With his half-baked wife, ditzy daughter, nerdy son, annoyingly perfect neighbours and unrealised professional football dreams, it’s no wonder poor old Al Bundy barely cracks a smile throughout the ten seasons of Married With Children (1987-1997).

His career as a shoe salesman also irked the unconventional father figure, but we fell in love with this unlikely family unit nonetheless, and their flaws only made us adore them more. Oh, Al!

2. The Fletchers (Home and Away)

The enduring Fletcher family has been roaming the streets and surfing the waves of Summer Bay for decades. The best known of the Fletchers would still have to be Sally (Kate Richie) and her adopted parents Pippa (played by Vanessa Downing and Debra Lawrence) and Tom (Roger Oakley).

The foster-parents-come-caravan-park-managers with seemingly endless love and room to spare encountered a multitude of trials and tribulations but always managed to keep the family together, even after Sally called a mentally unstable murderer “a real psycho” or when she discovered her imaginary friend was actually her twin brother.

The Clampetts (Beverly Hillbillies)

"Come and listen to my story 'bout a man named Jed
A poor mountaineer, barely kept his family fed
And then one day he was shootin' at some food
And up through the ground came a bubblin' crude
Oil, that is. Black gold. Texas tea…”
A ragtag bunch, if ever there was one, the endearing Clampetts!

Dominating TV ratings during the 1960s, The Beverly Hillbillies told the story of a simple Ozark-mountain family who struck gold, made millions and moved to an exclusive California address. Throughout its nine year run between 1962-1971, the Clampetts starred in 274 slap-your-knee Benny Hill style funny episodes.

Hilarious scenarios arise as their untrustworthy banker does his damnedest to keep their oil earnings in the bank by lavishing them with an opulent lifestyle and appeasing unhappy neighbours who want them out of town. Overall, it’s a rollicking good time!

4. The Keatons (Family Ties)

During the height of President Reagan’s reign the world was introduced to a young Republican named Alex P. Keaton, played perfectly by Michael J. Fox in his breakout television role.

Born to a couple of ex-hippies – architect Elyse and community radio employee Steven – the family also included less-than-intelligent, but flirty as hell, Mallory, middle-child syndrome prone Jennifer and, later, baby Andrew.

The sometimes political but always funny storylines had that beautiful sitcom quality of wrapping up neatly after half an hour, and they never failed to make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

5. Dorothy And Sophia (The Golden Girls)

No list would be complete without the ragtag team of Dorothy Zbornak and her mother, Sophia Petrillo. These two women were so different it was hard to believe they were related, the side-splitting banter between the kooky mother and sensible daughter was so good it turned a show featuring a mature, all female cast into a smash hit. We love them for it!

Scroll through the gallery above to see our top 5 TV families of all time.

Republished with permission of Wyza.com.au

Bill Murray goes classical and releases an album

It was on a trans-Atlantic flight from Berlin to New York in early 2013 when actor and comedian Bill Murray met German cellist Jan Vogler. Through this chance encounter the pair struck up a friendship, sharing enthuse for each other’s artistic worlds and interests, and soon after, decided to work together on a musical project.

The result? An unexpected and enchanting collaboration of music and literature, marking Murray’s first classical music album.

“After we knew each other [for] a little bit, I invited him one night to go to this Poetry Walk across the Brooklyn Bridge, and then a couple of days later said: You know, we could do this. We could do a show with this,” says Bill Murray.

The debut album New Worlds, features songs paired with literary readings, which are brought to life with classical music.

Murray – as both singer and narrator – brings his charm and wit to songs by George Gershwin and Leonard Bernstein, and recites the works of Walt Whitman, Ernest Hemingway, and Mark Twain.

He is joined by musicians Jan Vogler (cello), Mira Wang (violin), and Vanessa Perez (piano) – each at the top of their fields to bring together an unexpected collective of creative forces.

“We are from four different continents,” Murray told The New York Times. “And when the continents come together, the music moves right across the peninsulas from one to the other. It’s just a short journey from one continent to the other.”

The 67-year-old Groundhog Day star recognises no limits. With a penchant for crashing parties or showing up in the most unexpected places, Murray has however had an ever-present passion for literature, particularly poetry.

He has also made past vocal appearances. A recent musical collaboration was with former The Late Show bandleader, Paul Shaffer for the upbeat song ‘Happy Street’, and performed festive tunes with George Clooney and Miley Cyrus on his 2015 Netflix special, A Very Murray Christmas.

Though the classical direction may be a bit of a surprise, the eccentric comedian and actor has forged an independent Hollywood career and seems to love exploring new and serendipitous opportunities.

“I am bathing in this experience, really. I can’t get enough of it,” Bill Murray comments.

One recording has Murray reading a painful passage from The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn as the group plays ‘Moon River’. The classical crossover showcases American values in literature and music, and the bridges artists have built between America and Europe.

Cellist Jan Vogler’s distinguished career adds credence to the concept, whose strong curatorial approach to his music making and contemporary style of performance has pushed the boundaries of classical music.

Tracks from the album include, Van Morrison’s ‘When Will I Ever Learn to Live in God’ and Stephen Foster’s ‘Jeanie with the Light Brown Hair’ as well as numbers from West Side Story.

The moment that broke Andy Murray: "I've never had that"

Andy Murray was sent to tears at the Australian Open on Monday night as the Melbourne Arena crowd gave him a standing ovation in what might be his last professional match.

The game was at 5-1 in the fifth set, and Murray was about to serve when the crowd showed their respect for the 31-year-old Brit.

The two-time Wimbledon champion responded by wiping his tears and raising his racket in appreciation. He went on to hold his serve, and the game soon ended with the 6-4 6-4 6-7 (7-5) 6-7 (7-4) 6-2 victory of Murray’s opponent, Roberto Bautista-Agut.

Murray receives a standing ovation from the crowd before he serves in the fifth set 🙏#AusOpen pic.twitter.com/cH27iOZc5K
— #AusOpen (@AustralianOpen) 14 January 2019

"If this was my last match, it was an amazing way to end."

- Andy Murray 🙏#AusOpen pic.twitter.com/84qZiqau1C
— #AusOpen (@AustralianOpen) 14 January 2019

In the post-match conference, Murray said he was “really appreciative” of the audience.

“I was emotional at that moment,” said Murray to reporters.

“It was cool. I don’t think I’ve had that before in any matches. I don’t know if when I came to serve at Wimbledon for Wimbledon, I don’t know if that happened. Look, it was brilliant.”

Murray said the match would make a great end to his 14-year career in tennis.

“I literally gave everything that I had on the court, fought as best as I could, and performed a lot better than what I should have done without the amount I’ve been able to practice and train, you know, whatever,” said Murray.

“I’d be OK with that being my last match.”

Murray is currently facing a dilemma between taking a surgery on his chronic hip injury or playing a farewell match at Wimbledon in July.

“Having an operation like that, there’s absolutely no guarantees I’d be able to play again,” said Murray.

“That is the decision that I have to make. It will improve my quality of life, I’ll be in less pain doing normal things like walking around and putting your shoes on.”

See Australia: The bucket-list worthy walking track

The Murray River Walk is a four-day guided walk that combines hiking and houseboating along a 40-kilometre stretch of the Murray River between Renmark in South Australia and the Victorian border. While you’re wandering along river banks, across flood plains and through forests of red gums, a houseboat named Desire motors upriver to meet you with chilled wine and canapés at the end of each day. It’s a luxurious way to walk the walk, with hot showers, a top-deck spa and water views at every turn, including the five double bedrooms and two bathrooms, spacious lounge and dining area.

The food is a highlight, a showcase of local produce and native ingredients – Murray River scallops, kangaroo, yabbies, Riverland beef and lamb, quandong desserts and salads of samphire and native greens foraged during the day, as well as platters of emu pâté, olives, cheeses, chutneys, nuts and sundried fruits. Evening meals are presented degustation-style, with matched Riverland wines.

Walking is easy, more of a stroll than a trek along mostly level ground, covering between 10 and 15 kilometres each day. There are frequent stops as your guides show you the scars on trees where canoes, shields, woomeras and coolamons were cut from the bark by the Erawirung people, point out middens and cutting tools scattered in the undergrowth and the charcoal remains of ancient cooking hearths. There are plenty of stories of the paddle-steamer days, too, when hundreds of boats and barges plied the river, ferrying wool and supplies to the stations and ports along the waterway, with rusting relics and half-submerged wrecks. You’ll also learn how irrigation and water management has changed the landscape along one of our most highly regulated rivers with its system of dams, locks and weirs

The route meanders across two historic properties, Calperum and Bunyip Reach stations; the Murray River Walk has exclusive access, so you won’t see any other walkers. You will see plenty of kangaroos, skinks and, if you’re lucky, a shy echidna or two. Pelicans are constant companions, as are elegant egrets and slightly goofy spoonbills perched in treetops, cormorants and darters drying their wings on half-drowned branches and whistling kites riding the thermals. Ducks patrol the shallows and emus flounce across the floodplains, feathered skirts fluttering.

You’ll spend almost as much time on the river as you do on land, exploring anabranches and backwaters in an aluminium cruiser, negotiating locks and stickybeaking at historic customs houses and old shearing sheds, including a barbecue lunch and beer stop at Wilkadene Woolshed Brewery on the last day. As far as walking holidays go, it’s pretty cruisy.

WHERE IS IT?

The walk begins and ends in Renmark, 256km east of Adelaide, around a 3-hour drive east of Adelaide.

WHY GO?

Cruising and gourmet food.

WHEN TO GO?

Walking season is May to the end of September.

HOW LONG?

4 days.

This is an edited extract from Australia’s Best Nature Escapes by Lee Atkinson published by Hardie Grant Books [39.99] and is available in stores nationally.

Photographer: © Lee Atkinson

Andy Murray’s sad announcement on eve of Wimbledon

Andy Murray has pulled out of Wimbledon a day after confirming he was ready to play the Grand Slam tournament.

The 31-year-old two-time Wimbledon champion released a statement, saying: “It's with regret I'm withdrawing from Wimbledon.

“I've made significant progress in practice and matches over the last ten days, but after lengthy discussions with my team and with a heavy heart, we've decided that playing best of five set matches might be a bit too soon in the recovery process.

“We did everything we could to try to be ready in time. I will start practising on the hard courts from tomorrow and continuing with my rehab and recovery and I'm looking forward to the US hardcourt season.

“Thanks for all the messages of support and I'm excited to finally be back playing after so long out.”

The Brit has been beset by hip problems for the past year and underwent surgery less than six months ago. He returned to the competition two weeks ago.

Murray was due to face Frenchman Benoit Paire in the first round on Tuesday.

The official Wimbledon Twitter page responded to Murray's statement by posting on social media, writing: “Really sorry to hear the news, @andy_murray.

“From everyone at the All England Club, we wish you all the best with your journey back from injury.”

In 2013, Murray became the first British man in 77 years to win a Wimbledon singles title. Andy Murray makes shock Australian Open decision

One of the tennis world’s brightest stars won’t be gracing Rod Laver arena this year, with the news that Andy Murray has officially pulled out of the Australian Open.

The 30-year-old Scot, who hasn’t played a competitive match of tennis since last year’s Wimbledon quarter final, is the biggest name to pull out of this year’s tournament.

Murray pulled out of the Brisbane International earlier this week, and feels his hip cannot withstand the pressures involved with competing in a major open.

Australian Open Tournament Director Craig Tiley said while some supporters would be disappointed, ultimately Murray had to do what is best for his health.

“We are fully aware that Andy has been going through a difficult period with his hip and that he's done everything possible to prepare for the Australian summer,” Tiley said.

“Personally, I also know that Andy loves tennis and would do anything to play.
